What is Candida?

Candida is a fungus which is present in the intestines and in the mouth. In small quantities it actually helps with digestion and nutrient absorption.

The problem occurs when the good bacteria in the gut cannot control the growth of candida and it overgrows and they invade the cells in the intestinal lining, which causes toxins to be released in the body, causing leaky gut syndrome.

Once the toxins are in the body, the body’s immune system identifies the foreign bodies and tries to eliminate it. This creates inflammation and damages the surrounding tissue.

Candida can cause a number of symptoms, which are often misdiagnosed.

What Causes Candida?

There are a number of key causes of candida overgrowth such as:

Too many refined sugars and refined carbohydrates – candida is a fungus which needs energy to grow. Eating too much sugar and refined carbs gives candida an excellent source of energy and allows it multiply and grow.

Alcohol – similar to above, alcohol is another sugar source for candida and allows candida to overgrow.

Antibiotics – antibiotics are used to fight an infection and they kill bacteria, but they also kill the good bacteria in your gut, which helps control candida overgrowth. If there is no good bacteria the candida will just overgrow.

Symptoms of Candida

Mood Disorders – our gut is often referred to our second brain, and when you have digestive issues it often effects the mood. People with candida overgrowth can experience depression, anxiety and mood swings.

Gut Issues – a healthy gut means there is a balance of good and bad bacteria in the gut. When you have candida overgrowth the bad bacteria is overgrown and there is no balance, which can cause diarrhoea, bloating, constipation and cramping

Chronic Fatigue – this is the most common symptom of candida overgrowth and can be due to a weakened immune system which can cause nutrient deficiencies, making you feel tired and fatigued.

Vaginal and urinary Infections – nearly 75% of women will suffer from a form of vaginal infection. Candida can cause genital and urinal infections in both men and women.

Sinus Infection–candida overgrowth can cause a sinus infection and can create sore throats, nasal congestion and headaches.

How to cure Candida?

Fighting candida overgrowth and restoring your gut to good health requires lifestyles changes. Refined sugars and carbohydrates such as bread, cakes, sugar and alcohol should be remove from the diet immediately as these provide the candida fuel to grow.

The good bacteria in the gut also needs to be boosted in order to restore balance and reduce the candida overgrowth. A great candida overgrowth natural treatment is supplementing with Spirulina powder. It acts as a probiotic as it boosts the healthy bacteria in the gut, which is essential for fighting candida overgrowth.

Final Thoughts

Candida overgrowth is the most common fungal infection and a lot of the time the symptoms can be misdiagnosed. Following a healthy lifestyle, consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables and supplementing with spirulina can make the gut flourish with a variety of different and healthy good bacteria, which is vital to prevent candida overgrowth.
